Evaluation of clinical efficacy of Ginkgo biloba extract in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis: a randomized clinical trial

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by deteriorating articular cartilage. Most patients may not get enough control of symptoms in spite the availability various treatment options. Because synergistic impact flavonoids and ginkgolides, Ginkgo biloba (GB) has been shown to possess antioxidant anti-inflammatory properties besides its generally safe profile. This study aims assess efficacy extract (GBE) patient with Knee OA. Methods: randomized double blinded clinical trial conducted private orthopaedic clinic Al-Najaf Government-Iraq. Patients were into two groups; Group A administered standard (diclofenac capsule 100 milligram sustained released paracetamol 1 gram twice daily) GBE 120 daily, while B placebo (starch) only. The injury Outcome Score (KOOS) was performed OA for eight weeks. Results: 60 successfully completed weeks follow up. Pain, symptoms, sport, activity daily living (ADL) scores showed significant improvement from first after GB comparison group B. however, quality life (QOL) significantly improved at each assessment week. Only 10 reported gastrointestinal adverse effects during which all mild. Conclusions: provide additional beneficial health knee based on KOOS when add regime.
